South Africa with the Kids: A Zero Jet Lag Family Holiday

Exploring the world through children’s eyes can be a magical experience and South Africa is an absolutely fantastic family holiday destination. Packed full of awe-inspiring sights, it is a truly exhilarating, spirited and diverse country to open up young minds. It has an ideal climate with lots of sunny days and with no jet lag from the UK you and your family can dive straight into your South African adventure.

And there is nowhere better to introduce your children to the wilds of Africa than at the private Madikwe Game Reserve. Watch their eyes widen when they see their favourite animals in the wild, and together you can learn about protecting this precious wilderness. Back at the lodge kids can get involved in bush arts and craft, pizza making and star-gazing.

Next stop is fun-filled Cape Town. Kids will love the white-sand beaches of this ravishing city with activities ranging from surfing, seal & penguin-spotting and swimming in rock pools. Bed down at the One and Only Cape Town where there is an excellent kids club and friendly ‘can-do’ staff work around your needs. 

Enjoy a City Scavenger Hunt Tour to experience Cape Town and Table Mountain in a fun and unique way. Receive clues at each stage of your hunt to collect items and photographs, prepare local food and interact with locals to enhance your experience and appreciation of the city. 

On our ‘Wild Child’ Cape Peninsula Tour you'll head out of town to explore fairy and pixie milkwood forests, paddle board with penguins, find the Cape Point 5 Big Five (Ostrich, Baboons, Mountain Zebra, Bonta Buck and Tortoise) and discover shipwrecks! Wind down at Cape Point Vineyard with acres of gorgeous vineyards, fine Sauvignon Blanc for parents to savour and Atlantic views for all to enjoy.

A short journey from Cape Town and you will arrive at Hermanus, on the lush Garden Route. The draw here is the world-class whale watching and your family can share the incredible sight of these enormous mammals just metres from the shore. At luxury eco-paradise Grootbos, children will adore beach horse riding, collecting eggs for breakfast and treasure hunts through the ancient milkwood forests. Child minders are on hand throughout your stay and adults should definitely indulge in the nightly feasts of seafood and organic produce paired with local wines. You will all find it hard to leave this magical hotel!

  • Day 1 - Madikwe Safari Lodge - Waterberg Area
    Arrive in Johannesburg and transfer to Madikwe Safari Lodge. Day at leisure.
  • Day 2 - Madikwe Safari Lodge - Waterberg Area
    Activities include morning and afternoon game drives, bush walks, bird watching, astronomy and local community village tour.
  • Day 3 - Madikwe Safari Lodge - Waterberg Area
    Activities include morning and afternoon game drives, bush walks, bird watching, astronomy and local community village tour.
  • Day 4 - One&Only Cape Town - Cape Town
    Fly to Cape Town and transfer to the One & Only resort.
  • Day 5 - One&Only Cape Town - Cape Town
    Full day privately guided Fun City Scavenger Hunt Tour, including Table Mountain. 
  • Day 6 - One&Only Cape Town - Cape Town
    Full day privately guided ‘Wild Child’ Cape Peninsula Tour.
  • Day 7 - One&Only Cape Town - Cape Town
    Spend today at the V&A Waterfront – watch the street performers, browse the food market and craft stores, or ride the Cape Wheel. Optional half day privately-guided 'Footsteps & Township Tour'.
  • Day 8 - Grootbos - Hermanus
    Private car transfer to Hermanus (approx 1 ¾ hours) and check in to Grootbos.
  • Day 9 - Grootbos - Hermanus
    Walker Bay is world famous for being best place for land-based whale watching. Activities include guided horse-back riding, nature walks and from July - November you can observe Southern Right Whales from the hotel.
  • Day 10 - Grootbos - Hermanus
    Guided horse-back riding, nature walks and whale watching (July - November).
  • Day 11 - In transit.
    Fly home from Cape Town.
