Southern Mozambique
The Southern Mozambique coastline, from Ponta d’Ouro, with its pounding surf and windswept dunes to the shallow coastal lakes, serene lagoons and beautiful stretches of beaches are simply stunning. The legendary beaches of Tofo and Barra are home to a handful of gorgeous, luxurious lodges which deliver first world hospitality, superb seafood fare and squeaky clean, deserted beaches.
As well as being famed for its beaches, the region also offers a wealth of culture highlights including the famed ‘timbila (marimba) orchestras of the Chopi people and rich traditional lore, much of which focuses on the old kingdom of Gaza.
In the capital, Maputo - one of Africa’s prettiest and most personable capitals - you can sample the lively local nightlife, peruse the enormous Municipal Market or feast on fresh king prawns along the seaside Avenida Marginal. Just a couple of hours out of the city, the port town of Imhambane has some intriguing old Portuguese architecture, as well as a wide lagoon where you can take a dhow over to the neighbouring village of Maxixe.
