The Drostdy is one of the best-kept secrets in South Africa. A three-hour transfer from Port Elizabeth airport, this 48-room boutique hotel situated in the beautiful town of Graaff-Reinet, founded by the Dutch East India Company in 1786. A collection of Cape Dutch manor buildings, The Drostdy is an elegant ode to the area’s heritage with leather armchairs, crystal chandeliers and original yellow-wood floors. Facilities include three outdoor pools, a gym and wellness spa. There's also a superb restaurant – try the local venison and ostrich. The grand library is perfect for whiling away the evening and do explore the art gallery. Ask the concierge to arrange a visit to the atmospheric (usually members-only) Graaff-Reinet Club to enjoy dinner pre-drinks.

Graaff-Reinet is virtually surrounded by the Camdeboo National Park, in the heart of the Great Karoo (‘Place of Thirst’). Enjoy breathtaking views on top of the Valley of Desolation and watch the sun go down over the plains. A true oasis of style and comfort in the desert.
