Gangtey Lodge is a very special wood-and-stone luxury Bhutanese farmhouse. Opened in 2013 by the dynamic husband and wife duo, Brett and Omar Melzer, who also run Balloons over Bagan in Burma, Gangtey Lodge is a charming labour of love which effortlessly blends splendid cutting-edge design with a local homely Bhutanese feel.

Designed by Mary Lou Thomson, who has worked on some of the world’s most prestigious design projects, including Aman Sveti Stephan in Montenegro, Gangtey Lodge incorporates the best quality of materials, design and service; rich local fabrics, plush sofas, dark wooden beams, earthen fireplaces and an incredible floor-to-ceiling window in the lounge and dining area. Each of the 12 suites have cosy wood-burning stoves, underfloor heating and free standing baths, with breathtaking valley and monastery views through vast beautifully designed windows. And the food is fantastic, too! Guests are spoilt for choice between local Bhutanese dishes, other Asian cuisine and Western options, meaning all taste palettes are carefully considered and catered to.

We highly recommend enjoying your morning cup of coffee or tea overlooking the sweeping panoramic views from the outdoor terranc and breathing in the fresh alpine air before taking advantage of the hotel’s half to full-day excursions. These include cycling and trekking, as well as hot air balloon journeys over Bhutan’s ravishing pine forested landscapes. And when you have returned from a day of adventures, head to the traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath house. This is the newest addition to the hotel, opened in November 2016, and is the ultimate place for relaxing. Have a long aromatic soak followed by a sumptuous massage, and all your worries will be washed away.
