Merry Christmas

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is almost here once more, and with the festive season fully upon us we’re already saying Merry Christmas when leaving shops and restaurants. We’ve even given our Christmas greetings to friends and colleagues who we won’t be seeing again until the New Year.

The origin of the greeting ‘Merry Christmas’ is believed to date back as far as the 16^th Century when an English admiral coined the term in an informal letter. The message also appeared in the popular 16^th century Christmas carol, ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas.’  The festive message positioned itself as a mainstay in our festive traditions in 1843 when it was used by Charles Dickens in his classic tale, A Christmas Carol and appeared on the first ever formal Christmas card.

Since then it has become a greeting which we all say countless times each year, and has spanned numerous other variations within the English speaking world alone, from Happy Christmas to Seasons Greetings.

The seasonal wish is a globally recognised message for spreading Christmas cheer, but of course each country has their own variation of how to say it.

So we’ve asked people from around the world to send us their festive greetings showing us how to say Merry Christmas in over 20 different languages from around the world.
