Miyakojima

Three of Japan's top 10 beaches are here on Miyakojima, a far-flung island towards the southern end of the 1,000 km Okinawa island chain. Yonehara Maehama is arguably the best beach in Japan if not the whole of Asia - seven kilometres of pristine white sand on two sides of an island peninsula, with refreshingly little development along it.

15 minutes drive across on the east side of the island, Yoshino beach has a wonderful coral reef for scuba divers to explore, rich with marine life and fish shoals. Miyakojima is linked to two other idyllic small islands by bridges, including the longest footbridge in Japan opened in 2015. For beach lovers it is Asia's hidden gem, well connected to Tokyo by a daily direct flights.
