Male is one of the world's smallest capitals (approximately one square mile) and is home to approximately 75,000 people - a third of the country's population. Unlike the majority of the islands in the Maldives, Male is heavily built up with numerous high rises, paved streets, markets, a harbour and several mosques. If passing through take the opportunity to visit the fish market and the local produce market at the waterfront as well as the new harbour in the southwest corner and the 400-year old Friday Mosque. Or simply sit down and relax at one of the small parks dotted around the capital and just observe the pace of life. Hulule International Airport is located on its own island, which is a 10-minute boat ride away from Male town. Transfers to the individual resorts will be directly from the airport island.
