Ranthambore

The Maharaja of Jaipur used this vast expanse of dry deciduous forests, lakes, meadows and mountains for a private hunting reserve until it became a national park in 1972. One of the earliest tiger reserves in India, Ranthambore offers reliable sighting figures and several charming lodges, ranging from the simple to the opulent. At its centre are a ruined 10th-century fort and a temple to Ganesh, an excellent spot for bird watching. As well as tigers, there are leopards (often referred to as panthers) and other jungle cats, but you will need a great deal of time and patience to see them.
