Trincomalee
Trincomalee, the largest town on Sri Lanka's eastern coast, spreads across a number of rocky promontories surrounding a beautiful harbour and bay. The Portuguese, the Dutch, the king of Kandy, the French and the English repeatedly fought over this strategically-located harbour, which ultimately even served as a base for the Allied fleet in World War II. Trincomalee offers some of the best beaches in the country, especially in the northern stretch of 'Trinco', known as Nilaweli, where shallow beach goes up to half a mile into the sea. Towards sunset, the town comes to life around Dutch Bay.
