Dhulikhel

The last town in the Kathamandu Valley, Dhulikhel is well known for its fine Newari brick mansions with latticework windows, its panoramic views of the Himalayan range, its sunrise walk to the Kali shrine - with gorgeous views of daybreak over the mountains - and two cultural sites to the south, Namobuddha (a deeply holy site for Tibetans, particularly in the pilgrimage seasons of Feburary and March, which makes a fine day walk or cycle ride for visitors) and Panauti, a temple town at the confluence of two rivers, with Nepal's oldest surviving temple, built in 1294. Not as tranquil as it once was, Dhulikhel still makes a good base for walking and mountain biking. It is a relaxed place to spend the first or last night of a tour.
