Fort Tiracol Heritage Hotel
Goa
Standing on a sliver of land at Goa's northern-most tip, where the Arabian Sea meets the Tiracol River, this gloriously isolated 16th-century Portuguese fort offers stunning views. The rooms have earthy ochre and white decor, with black marbled cement floors, black-tiled drench showers, fans and rustic furniture. The fort has seven rooms, including two suites, and a small terrace bar and restaurant. Nearby is the deserted Kevi Beach on the opposite side of the river, which provides perfect solitude and peace from the hustle and bustle of the more crowded Goan beaches. Completely off the beaten track, this heritage hotel involves a 2-3 hour journey from the airport by both car and ferry.
To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.
