Sultans Battery

This beautiful, peaceful area of coffee and cardamom plantations is a true slice of rural Kerala. It was once known as Ganapathivattom - "the fields of Ganapathi" (or Ganesh, the elephant-headed son of Shiva) - and Tipu Sultan built a fort and battery for his army here in the 18th Century. Only a few ruins remain, but nearby are the Edakkal Caves, discovered during a colonial hunting trip on the summit of Ambukuthimala Hill, with petroglyphs of humans and animals dating back to 2500BC, and Muthanga National Park, a successful Project Elephant reserve that is also home to tigers, monkeys, gaur and leopards.
