Kitulgala

Kitulgala - which is named after the sago palms that surround it - is in the low hills to the west of the Central Highlands, sprawling along a beautiful wide river called the Kelani. This has helped to turn it into an adventure destination; upriver there are rapids, perfect for medium-level white water rafting (more demanding in spate), while the quieter parts of the river are lovely for swimming and the rainforest is popular for hiking, being full of birds and butterflies. Its other claim to fame is as the location for the David Lean film "Bridge on the River Kwai", though there is little to see but the concrete foundations in the water. Kitulgala is very wet, with two monsoons a year.
