Edinburgh and The Lothians

Scotland’s royal city, Edinburgh, is a real jewel. From ancient castles to royal palaces and Georgian townhouses, the city exudes history and culture. Holyrood Palace, down the Royal Mile, is the official residence of the monarchy in Scotland and is still used as a summer residence by the Queen. Nearby, despite the strenuous climb, it is worth scaling the Salisbury Crags to enjoy dramatic views of the city from Arthur’s Seat. Edinburgh Castle, located in the Old Town and majestically perched on the top of Castle Rock, dates from the 12^th Century and is a must visit. The shopping in Edinburgh is fabulous, with a mix of quirky boutiques, department stores and high street shops. For designer indulgence, pop into Scotland’s only Harvey Nichol’s or browse the city’s oldest department store, Jenner’s, which opened its doors in 1838. As well as a weighty past, Edinburgh is a city with its feet very firmly in the present. The city hosts many world-famous festivals, including the International Edinburgh Festival, as well as its more popular little sister, the Fringe, where you’ll find amateur dramatics, comedy, musical theatre and much, much more. For blues lovers, the Edinburgh Jazz festival takes place every year in July. Combine a stay at this exciting and dynamic city with the surrounding tranquil and dramatic countryside of the Lothians. Explore over forty miles of coastline, ramble along the rolling hills or play on some of the world’s finest golf courses.
