Inverness

Known as the gateway to the Scottish Highlands, Inverness is the United Kingdom's most northerly city. The city straddles the River Ness and many people come to take advantage of the natural beauty and scenery of nearby Loch Ness, one of the most famous of the many Highland lochs. Inverness is a good base for a range of outdoor activities, including walking in the nearby Cairngorms National Park, golf, boat trips and even dolphin watching, in addition to day trips to Skye and Scotland's scenic West Coast. Nearby cultural highlights include Culloden Battlefield, the Gardens of Mey, former home of the Queen Mother, Urquhart Castle, on the banks of Loch Ness, and Cawdor Castle, supposedly one of the inspirations of MacBeth. Incredibly easy to get to, there are daily flights from London and the train from Edinburgh takes just over 3 hours.
