Botswana: When to go
Botswana’s seasons run in reverse to the Northern Hemisphere with summer from October to May, peaking between November and February when temperatures reach their hottest and electrical storms can light up the night sky. This is also Botswana’s ‘rainy’ season which typically is the only time of year when Botswana has rain with the rest of the year being dry. Botswana's winter is not as cold as Europe and runs from June to August. The water levels in the Okavango are dictated by the summer rains in Angola which takes up to 6 months to reach the Okavango, so whilst this is the ‘dry’ season, it is when the Delta reaches its highest levels (from June to August). The wildlife tends to be at its most prolific during the dry season when game congregates around water holes and are more likely to hunt during the days with the cooler weather. For safaris, the most visited time of the year is between July and September (the ‘dry’ season) although during the wetter months in ‘summer’, the area is green and lovely with superb birdlife, butterflies and wild flowers and it is the time when the wildlife gives birth to their young - all contributing to making the ‘rainy’ season another lovely time to visit.
British Airways offer direct flights from London to Johannesburg (duration 11.5 hours), located in the east of South Africa. SAA and Virgin Atlantic also fly this route. On arrival in Johannesburg, there are two connecting flights (duration 2 hours) on either South African Airlink or Air Botswana which fly direct to Maun, situated in the North of Botswana - often called the ‘gateway to the Okavango’ due to its close proximity to the Delta. If you are combining Botswana with South Africa, there are also direct flights from Cape Town to Maun and from Cape Town to London.
A visa is not required for UK passport holders.
However, this is an important reminder that the Immigration rules for Minors are still in effect in South Africa. As such, travelling with kids to South Africa currently has strict rules and requirements which need to be adhered to in order to enter the country.
