Places of interest in Botswana
From the watery magic of the Okavango Delta to the stark, arid beauty of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana is a land of startling contrasts. The majority of Botswana’s ‘hot spots’ lie in the north. Probably best known is the Okavango Delta which is the largest inland delta in the world. It’s a beautiful oasis in the Kalahari Desert, whose waters start flowing from the highlands of Angola all the way over the sands of the Kalahari Desert. A truly unique wetland ecosystem teeming with diverse animals and studded with private reserves. The Okavango Delta became the 1000th inscribed site on the World Heritage List of Unesco in 2014. Whilst a Delta safari should always be on an itinerary, it is well worth spending a little more time in this extraordinary country to discover a surprising variety of experiences that Botswana has not always been known for. To the north of the country, there is superb game in the Chobe, Savute and Linyanti areas, while the Okavango Panhandle is a dreamy spot for keen birders as well as the c2000 year-old rock art at Tsodilo Hills. To the South, the varied climes of the timeless Kalahari is home to the black-maned lions, the breath-taking horizons of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and the isolation and other-worldliness of the salt pans of the Makgadikgadi, home to the historic San-Bushman culture. The country’s policy of high-cost, low volume tourism, ensures that the wildlife thrives unhindered and the fortunate visitors enjoy unprecedented exclusivity. Trust us, the Botswana bug will stay with you forever!
