Mhondoro Game Lodge is an idyllic private game lodge in Welgevonden Game Reserve, a malaria-free reserve in Limpopo. Ideally located from Johannesburg, this is a place to see the ‘Big 5’ (African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, lion and rhino) in their natural habitat. The lodges are supremely comfortable and stylishly decorated with roaring fireplaces and decks – filled with personal touches such as hot water bottles, candle-lit baths and attentive service. Other lodge facilities include a gym and heated swimming pools for all year-round splashing as well as a dedicated massage suite complete with a private, outdoor spa deck and bath, where a variety of massage treatments are offered, along with manicures and pedicures.

The main lodge provides access to a tunnel that leads you to an intimate view of the underground waterhole hide. At ground level, the hide provides the memorable opportunity to get up close to elephants and other wildlife drinking and bathing. The roles are also reversed as elephants amiably amble past guests swimming in the pool – a delight of safari life. There are two game drives in open vehicles or walking safaris with a guide each day  The villa offers an exclusive experience – housing six people and replete with butler, chef and private gym.

The villa was lovely, just what we needed and the hotel had helpfully put us as far away as possible from everyone else.
