Steenberg Farm and Vineyards
Franschhoek & The Winelands
Steenberg Farm is a glorious slice of Cape history. The oldest farm in the region, established in 1682, this 28-room boutique hotel is steeped in heritage. Relaxed and rustic luxury is the order here, Steenberg might only be a 30 minute drive from the bright lights of Cape Town but it is another world. Nestled in the Constantiaberg amphitheater of the Table Mountain range, the farm is a complete destination, sporting an 18-hole golf course, spa and excellent winery (producing arguably the finest Sauvignon Blanc in the country). The suites are an experience; go for the Dutch East India or Cape Colonial choices in the charming manor house. Other rooms, a tasteful mixture of classic and contemporary, are spread throughout the property, including the sunny barn conversion.
The award-winning restaurants, Catharina’s (named after an indomitable 17th century chatelaine – the first female landowner in South Africa) and Bistro1682, with its waterside terrace and tapas, both offer superior dining using the freshest local ingredients. Each corner tells a story – even the origami swans on the restaurant ceiling reflect the farm's evocative original name - “Swaaneweide” – The Feeding Place of Swans. Magical.
The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.
