Discover Luxury Zambia Holidays
Although land-locked, Zambia offers access to one of Africa’s most mesmerising sights: Victoria Falls. Sharing the Falls with neighbouring Zimbabwe, Zambia provides a wild and undeveloped side to Africa, and one less trodden by visitors. Those that come to Zambia are rewarded with an alternative and truly remarkable view of Victoria Falls, remote and untamed wilderness in lesser-known National Parks such as Kuafe and both North and South Luangwa. Safari adventures in this nation showcase some of the best leopard and wild dog viewing in Africa. Coupled with unique river-side camps on the Zambezi, such as the charming and whimsical Tongabezi, and sumptuous treehouse lodgings that are the last word in eco-luxe, Zambia is well worth a visit.
Many visitors are drawn to Victoria Falls, and with good reason. Most come via Livingstone, (named after British explorer, Dr. David Livingstone) where the city’s colonial charm meets the raw natural beauty and riverside wildlife of the Zambezi River. Here it’s a short hop to the mighty and misty Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, bordered by mist-soaked forests and accompanied by a thundering soundtrack. One of the unique advantages of viewing Victoria Falls from Zambia is that during dry season (October to December) visitors can access Livingstone Island and Devil’s Pools, a natural infinity pool that overlooks the vast sheet of cascading water where daring swimmers have the chance to swim right up to the edge of. Adventurous thrill-seekers should also know that only Zambia offers the opportunity to micro-light over the falls. Other options for adrenaline-fuelled activities include white water rafting on the Zambezi and helicopter flights over the falls, both of which offer a spectacular view and unforgettable memories of Zambia. Sunset cruises, often accompanied by smooth South African wines, might be of interest to those preferring a slower pace to appreciate the sights and sounds of the Zambezi and its inhabitants as the day draws to a close.
Set back from the falls, the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park is home to game such as giraffe, zebra and antelope, viewed within the landscapes of riverine forests and savannah. The Mosi-Oa-Tunya also offers a unique opportunity to track on foot the beautiful rare white rhino, which is continually guarded by anti-poaching officers. Game drives include pathways around the Zambezi river increasing the chance of spotting crocodile, hippo and aquatic birdlife. Other fascinating game-viewing opportunities present themselves at the Lower Zambezi National Park which is known for leopard sightings and also smaller but just as rewarding animals such as the honey badger and porcupine. In pristine wilderness of the South Luangwa National Park, a short flight from Livingstone, leopards and lion are common sightings plus here you may well see the enthralling spectacle of wild dog in packs hunting their prey.
Zambia also offers some of Africa’s most luxurious and spacious accommodation which after days spent viewing nature’s dazzling and spell-binding sights, are most welcome. Whether you want to snuggle up in luxury tents overlooking the Zambezi or luxuriate in a safari-chic hideaway nestled within the trunks of Ebony trees, you’ll find it waiting for you in Zambia.
