When to go: Zambia
Like its neighbours in Botswana and Zimbabwe, Zambia has a sub-tropical climate and its weather is defined by a marked wet and dry season, rather than summer and winter. The ‘dry’ season runs from May to October and is the best time for game viewing. The ‘wet’ or ‘rainy’ season runs from November to April and is a very pretty time to visit, however, due to the thick vegetation, animals can be a little more difficult to see. It is also worth noting that many of the lodges and camps close for the ‘rainy’ season in Luangwa and Kafue, although Lodges stay open year-round in and around Victoria Falls.
British Airways offer direct flights from London to Johannesburg (duration 11.5 hours), located in the East of South Africa. On arrival in Johannesburg, there are a number of daily flights to Livingstone if you are planning on visiting Victoria Falls, or daily flights to Lusaka if you are planning a safari to South Luangwa or Kafue National Parks. Charter flights operate regularly between Livingstone and Mfuwe (South Luangwa) and from Lusaka to Kafue National Park.

British passport holders need a visa to enter Zambia. You can get a visa from the Zambian High Commission in London before you travel. Single and double entry visit visas are available on arrival at all ports of entry, but multi-entry visas are not. If you plan to get a visa on arrival, make sure you have the correct amount of cash (US dollars) with you as change may not be available. If you enter through Kenneth Kaunda International Airport you can now make payment for single and double entry visas via credit or debit card at the Zambian Immigration desks. However, if you are planning on travelling through South Africa en-route to Zambia, this is an important reminder that the Immigration rules for Minors are still in effect in South Africa. As such, travelling with kids to South Africa currently has strict rules and requirements which need to be adhered to in order to enter the country.
