Victoria Falls (Zambia)

Victoria Falls, or Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning “The smoke that thunders”, is one of the most spectacular wonders of nature. It is one of the most significant geographical features of the Zambezi River and one of the most famous waterfalls on Earth.

From a tiny, bubbling spring rising in the north of Zambia, the Zambezi River starts a staggering 2,574 km journey from the heart of Southern Africa to the Indian Ocean. Travelling south from Zambia, it becomes wide and cumbersome, forming extensive marshes where the width of the river in flood is known to exceed an astonishing 25 kilometres. It continues flowing through the Caprivi Swamps and joins up with the Chobe River in Botswana before journeying east. The Zambezi at this point is nearly 2 kilometres wide and flows placidly through its broad channel giving little indication of what lies ahead. A distant roar grows louder and a column of cloud can be seen escaping 400 meters into the sky. The river then cascades 100 meters over the edge into a chasm which dissects its path, forming a truly dramatic spectacle.

In 1855, famous explorer and missionary David Livingstone discovered the Falls during an expedition and was not best pleased with his find as it seriously impeded his journey south. He named the falls after Queen Victoria. Despite the inconvenience, he found the waterfall fascinating and famously wrote that the angels flying nearby were probably admiring the beauty of the scene.

Today, the Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a magnificent and mighty landmark on the African continent and one which is well worth a visit.

For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move.
Robert Louis Stevenson

Everything you did for us whilst we were away was hugely appreciated, and Ampersand has been exemplary in every way. I'll always recommend you!
- Mr Richard Stoughton, Sri Lanka
I had a very lovely time and was looked after splendidly. My first visit to India could not have been better, save for being longer! But I shall return at some point and I shall look to you to make the arrangements.
- Matthew Nicklin, North India
Without question, you put together the best trip I have ever taken. We were shown around like visiting dignitaries, the hotels were fantastic and the itinerary was just right. Everybody I know will hear about how amazing Ampersand is!
- Leslie Siben, India
Difficult to articulate just how good the service from you and your team really was. We know you will continue to do well and hope we have the chance to seek your assistance again before long.
- Mr & Mrs Manson, North India
I thought the Ampersand team was outstanding. We couldn’t have hoped for anything more.
- Mr Geoffrey Johnson, India
We had a wonderful holiday - everything was perfect. Thank you for helping us to make a thoughtful plan to enjoy and make most out of our trip. The places we visited, the guides, the transportation and driver, the hotels selected... Everything was great!
- Jaime Benitez, South India
Ampersand’s preparation, attention to detail and interaction before and during our trip show exactly why good travel agents have a role in today’s internet booking age. They were a delight to deal with!
- Mr David Wallace, North India
So many highlights to choose from! The hotels were amazing but Maya Villa was a highlight… I loved just hanging out in the hammock reading my book and watching the peacocks chase the cows!
