Scotland: Festivals and Events

Scotland has plenty to offer, including several annual events that we absolutely love. Read on to learn which ones we recommend, as well as a few of our personal favourite haunts and must-do activities.

UK - Aberdeenshire
James Jayasundera, Ampersand founder & MD – “I love the rugged romantic beauty of the Scottish Highlands, the smell of the heather and peaty soil, the craggy mountains and the fast dynamic weather – one moment hail and rain and the next misty shafts of golden sunlight. Loch Ness is a wondrous place to visit and the legend of her illusive monster, who is said to lurk beneath, adds a layer of mystery to this moving landscape. You can cruise the lake by boat or visit the eery 13th century Urquhart Castle on the banks of the loch. For those who want to splash out in extravagant style, there is simply nowhere more lavish and historic than Aldourie Castle, complete with turrets, spires, original art and manicured lawns stretching down to Loch Ness. It is the only inhabitable castle on the loch and it is like something out of a fairytale.”

“For a romantic trip you can’t beat the light and colours of the countryside in the Scottish Highlands; the dark purples, rich greens and dark browns are unlike anywhere else in the world. But for me, no trip to Scotland would be complete without a stay in the Royal city of Edinburgh – it is one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in the world. If you have never been, put it on your hit list for 2014; it is easily accessible from London via a 50-minute flight. Experience the Edinburgh Jazz Festival, the Edinburgh Festival in August, or its little sister, the Fringe, for some of the finest up-and-coming comedy performers, musical theatre and amateur dramatics. Edinburgh is also the ideal place to head for a snugly winter trip. Banish the winter blues in the sensational and sexy Scottish suites at The Witchery, which is steps away from Edinburgh Castle. It is dripping with antique tapestries, rich red curtains and cushions, and bathrooms flickering with candlelight illuminating the gold-leaf walls. It’s like sleeping in lavish chambers from the Middle Ages!”

"I am a total train fanatic... I love the sense of adventure of bunking down in a luxury cabin and watching, wide-eyed, as ever-changing views chug past. And to me, Scotland is all about the views. To drink in the rugged Scottish Highlands in style, step aboard the ultra stylish Royal Scotsman, part of the Orient Express group, for journeys ranging from 1 night to 7 nights. Tour Scotland's whisky distilleries, world-class golf courses, ancient castles, crystal clear lochs and scenic glens – the Scottish Highlands are considered the last great wilderness of Europe. Alternatively, if you’re not a train person, Scotland has an exceptional selection of hotels – from the luxurious Inverlochy Castle to Cameron House, on the banks of Loch Lomond and Gleneagles, future host of the Ryder Cup, the cosy Loch Ness Lodge, which is well located for day trips to the Isle of Skye, or Alladale Wilderness Reserve where you can walk, hike, fish and shoot to your heart's content."

I had a very lovely time and was looked after splendidly. My first visit to India could not have been better, save for being longer! But I shall return at some point and I shall look to you to make the arrangements.
- Matthew Nicklin, North India
Without question, you put together the best trip I have ever taken. We were shown around like visiting dignitaries, the hotels were fantastic and the itinerary was just right. Everybody I know will hear about how amazing Ampersand is!
- Leslie Siben, India
Difficult to articulate just how good the service from you and your team really was. We know you will continue to do well and hope we have the chance to seek your assistance again before long.
- Mr & Mrs Manson, North India
Ampersand’s preparation, attention to detail and interaction before and during our trip show exactly why good travel agents have a role in today’s internet booking age. They were a delight to deal with!
- Mr David Wallace, North India
Everything you did for us whilst we were away was hugely appreciated, and Ampersand has been exemplary in every way. I'll always recommend you!
- Mr Richard Stoughton, Sri Lanka
We had a wonderful holiday - everything was perfect. Thank you for helping us to make a thoughtful plan to enjoy and make most out of our trip. The places we visited, the guides, the transportation and driver, the hotels selected... Everything was great!
- Jaime Benitez, South India
So many highlights to choose from! The hotels were amazing but Maya Villa was a highlight… I loved just hanging out in the hammock reading my book and watching the peacocks chase the cows!
- Krista Weir, Sri Lanka
I thought the Ampersand team was outstanding. We couldn’t have hoped for anything more.
- Mr Geoffrey Johnson, India
