Opened in 2006, the Hotel by the Red Canal is a compact boutique hotel near many of Mandalay's main sites. The 24 cosy rooms (referred to as suites by the hotel) are decorated with teak and rattan furnishings and traditional Burmese fabrics. The rooms at the front of the hotel have the most natural light and look out onto a small stream that winds round the hotel. The beautiful gardens are well maintained and the small kidney shaped pool is surrounded by a small deck. Service is exceptional, there is a small gym and spa and complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. The Indian owner has gained a well earned reputation for the Indian food at the Spice Garden restaurant, although breakfasts can be a bit hit and miss.
