Thiripyitsaya Sanctuary Resort
Bagan
Situated just outside of Old Bagan, the spacious Thiripyitsaya Sanctuary Resort has a brilliant location on the banks of Myanmar's Irrawaddy River.
The resort has 127 guest rooms and suites, each decorated in a simple Burmese style, using hardwoods and local textiles. The original bungalows, which date from the 1970s, are identical in design and spread out across manicured gardens facing the river. Basic, but not without their charms, the bungalows vary in location and view. However, we would strongly recommend the eight suites in two-storey buildings on the river front, ideal for guests who are looking for a higher level of comfort and privacy. All have Irrawaddy River views from their verandahs and the suites have a sitting area, a bedroom and a well-appointed bathroom including a terrazzo bathtub.
The large and scenic swimming pool is surrounded by a sun deck, and a range of western and Asian meals are served on the terrace, or in the Pavilion Lounge restaurant – both of which have stunning views of the Irrawaddy River, especially at sunset. Wi-fi is available only in reception and there is a small spa and gift shop on site.
To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.
