Kashgar is most famed for it's Sunday Bazaar which has been running in some form since the city's first written mention in the 2nd-century BC. It was of the most prosperous trading posts and most strategically important cities on the Silk Road. The narrow mud-walled alleys of the Old Town give a wonderful sense of a bygone era. Sadly, the Chinese government have flattened large areas of the original town and built plenty of bland modern buildings, but the essence remains.
