Lions & Wolves: Gujarat’s Exceptional Wildlife

13 days from £6,380 for 2023 per person
This tailor-made wildlife experience takes you to India’s western state of Gujarat, for a truly unique wildlife experience, where Asiatic Lions are legendary and the elusive Indian wolf roams without limits.
Gujarat borders Pakistan's Sindh province to the northwest, is bounded by the Arabian Sea to the southwest, the state of Rajasthan to the northeast, Madhya Pradesh to the east, and by Maharashtra to the south. The region is mostly arid and the Rann of Kutch is a seasonally marshy, saline clay desert located near the Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert. This landscape is ideal to support a unique biodiversity which is quite different to what you would find in other parts of the country.
Gujarat is the last bastion of the Asiatic Lion where the remaining 500 beauties rule Gir Wildlife Sanctuary. Velavadar’s Savannah grasslands and scrub also provide the optimum habitat for the blackbuck, the endemic handsome Indian antelope, and some of India’s largest herds can be seen in this park. The abundance of antelope attracts three key predators in the state; the endangered Indian wolf, the striped hyena and the jungle cat. Other wildlife that one can look out for in Gujarat are the sloth bear, desert fox, golden jackal, desert cat, and the Asiatic wild ass. Gujarat also supports a diverse variety of birdlife, including giant flocks of pelican and flamingo, with populations going into the thousands. It is also home to the marvelous and endangered great Indian bustard, yet sadly the last 44 individuals fight extinction.
