Set in nine acres of stunning, almost Jurassic-like tropical grounds, staggered up the steep slopes of the sacred Ayung River Gorge, COMO Shambhala Estate must be one of the most beautiful hotels in the world.

The hotel encourages a holistic approach to life focusing on wellness, but does this in a wonderfully relaxed manner – unless you knew you would not even notice. The accommodation is spread through the estate in uniquely styled Residences (each Residence contains four or five suites) plus four Private Villas and five Retreat Villas, each with their own pool. The service is laid back and friendly, and the tasty food is locally sourced, produced perfectly to complement the wellness ethos. To be expected, the hotel offers a range of indulgent spa programmes. The minimalist and award-winning spa looks out on to Ubud's famous green gorges below, and is home to a river-front swimming pool. For those who are more adventurous, mountain biking, trekking and rafting in the surrounding area is also on offer.
