Pulau Joyo Resort
Pulau Joyo
Set on a pristine island in the little-known Riau Archipelago, Pulau Joyo is a relatively new, extremely well-appointed addition to the eco-luxe scene in Indonesia. This idyllic paradise is just a three hour boat ride from Singapore and home to palm-fringed tropical beaches, where bright white sand meets turquoise shimmering waters.
For those of you who love barefoot luxury, the bar has been seriously raised here. The resort is chic and sophisticated, yet it still maintains a relaxed, rustic vibe. Care has been made to keep the natural surroundings as unspoiled as possible and traditional craftsmanship and eco-friendly materials have been used in both the construction and the decoration of the entire property - a wonderful combination.
Nine gorgeous driftwood palaces and Java houses make up the spacious accommodation and are furnished with rare finds from across the world, from Moroccan-style lamps to eye-catching furniture; our favourites being the intricately carved four poster beds and azure blue door frames. Tranquil indoor and outdoor living spaces are scattered throughout the resort, meaning one can take their pick between relaxing on a sofa or on a sun-lounger open to fresh the sea air. Make sure to swim in the beautifully curved 23 metre pool and make use of the towering open-air games and pool house set amid lush, perfectly manicured gardens here – sure to keep guests of all ages entertained. A few steps away, brilliant snorkelling and swimming among tropical fish and colourful coral awaits; not to mention Pulau Joyo offers water sport activities and even has its own 140 foot charter yacht for guests! Back on dry land, we highly recommend indulging yourself at the world-class spa if you are after complete and utter relaxation, as well as enjoying the fantastic food and wine served on the beach here by the friendly staff.
While Pulau Joyo is best suited to couples thanks to its romantic desert island feel, we also recommend it to families as the award-winning property offers an array of activities and excursions as mentioned above, as well babysitting services.
To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.
