Solo, or Surakarta, is one of the least westernised cities on the island and arguably the epicentre of Javanese individuality and tradition. Often overlooked in favour of its more conspicuous neighbour, Yogyakarta, this conservative town comprises of twisting backstreets, traditional markets, shiny new malls and exciting city tours. It’s a good place to stop off for a night or two, to spend time in the city and to venture outside to visit some fascinating nearby temples. The city also attracts students and scholars alike to its music and dance academies, and it's an excellent place to see traditional performing arts, as well as traditional crafts, especially batik, which is a local staple.
