One of Takayama’s newest hotels, the Ouan is part of a new style of accommodation in Japan that seeks to combine western comfort and traditional design. Several of their rooms therefore have twin or double beds in one area and bamboo-mat floorspace in another, to allow guests to experience the best of both worlds. Hearty traditional dinners can be included here which is essential if arriving in the evening as local restaurants tend to close early. The Ouan even has its own rooftop hot spring bathhouse (separated men and women), ideal for relaxing in after a day strolling the old streets and temple walks of this historic town.
