Seekers of the finest hot springs in Japan invariably have Nyuto Onsen in their top three.
For three hundred years these baths and the traditional inn Tsurunoyu have been sought by the Japanese for their remedial properties. The milky-white waters, steam and remote mountain location make it one of the most atmospheric places to bathe in Japan. True to tradition, this is also one of the very few places that still has mixed gender baths, though there are also separate baths for men and women.
Despite its remote location it is easily accessed by a branch of the bullet train line and local taxi. Nyuto receives very few non-Japanese visitors, so it is definitely one for the more adventurous traveller.
