Tucked away in a secluded palm grove on the Arabian Sea, the delightful Neeleshwar Hermitage is one of our favourite properties in Southern India.

Overlooking an unspoiled beach, the Neeleshwar Hermitage oozes understated sophistication in a tranquil coastal environment. Each guest room is housed in a traditional Keralan style thatched cottage with a private courtyard garden, balcony and outdoor bathroom and they blend modern convenience with beautiful teak floors, handmade furniture and antiques. When not out and about, the hotel has a beautiful swimming pool overlooking the beach along with a traditional spa where the treatments range from Ayurveda to organic facials, scrubs and wraps, aromatherapy and Indian massages.

Meal times at the Neeleshwar Hermitage as a simple yet delicious affair. With two restaurants to choose from; Annapurna (vegetarian Indian) and Meenakshi (fish restaurant on the beach) there is something to satisfy everyone. For those who want to learn how to cook traditional Keralan dishes, there is the opportunity to take a lesson with one of Neeleshwar’s chefs. Complimentary wifi is available.

To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.
