Tranquebar
The peaceful and windswept village of Tranquebar is unlike anywhere else in Tamil Nadu. After brokering a deal with the King of Tanjore in the 17th century, King Christian IV of Denmark established an important trading post for the Danish East India Company, which was later sold to the British East India company. In over 300 years of foreign occupation numerous warehouses and colonial mansions were built to facilitate trade in the area, as well as some beautiful churches and a Christian mission, many of which can still be seen today. The rugged Fort Dansborg still dominates the sea front, and has a small museum displaying a collection of artefacts dating from the period of Danish Residence in the region.
