Cape Weligama
Weligama
Cape Weligama features in Ampersand's Top 10 Swimming Pools
Set on the southern coast just 30 minutes east of the historic town of Galle, Cape Weligama is luxury beach resort in undoubtedly one of the best positions along this coastline. Not only does this hotel have phenomenal 270-degree panoramic views over the Indian Ocean, but it is also backed by a palm-covered headland and set within 12 acres of landscaped gardens.
The property’s style is the brainchild of the Thai architect Lek Bunnag and reflects traditional Sri Lankan design with its village-style layout and terracotta-tiled rooftops, while also combining smart and contemporary architectural elements. Sunlight floods into the spacious 40 suites and villas through their large windows, which also provide incredible views out to the sea beyond. This beachy atmosphere compliments the bright interior design and continues into the en-suite bathrooms, which are all ample sized and fitted with twin vanities, a stone bathtub and even a steam room.
Cape Weligama rightfully prides itself on its vast crescent-shaped infinity pool, as this feature is arguably the focal point of the resort. Sitting atop the cliff edge, it offers dramatic views and makes for the ideal spot to sunbathe on the elegant burgundy loungers or take a refreshing dip in the water when needed. Other amenities include in-villa spa experiences, a gym, a Kid’s Club and a Dive Centre. We recommend taking advantage of the water sports on offer here, (especially surfing, as Weligama is famed for its waves), and the other outdoor activities. One of our favourites is the bike ride that takes you past rice paddies, cinnamon plantations and local wildlife.
There are a number of restaurants and bars to pick between here: if you are tempted by fresh seafood, dine at Ocean Terrace for the catch of the day, or if you are after other Sri Lankan dishes, choose from the varied menu at Tableau.
A trademark of the Resplendent Ceylon brand is their personalised service and we are happy to confirm that this level of care and attention is offered here. We recommend this property to families and groups of friends who would appreciate staying near to one another in airy villas in a coastal setting.
