One of our favourite hotels on the island, Club Villa feels more like staying with friends than at a hotel. The hotel, designed by Geoffrey Bawa, the island's most renowned architect, is tucked away in a coconut plantation just a stone's throw from a mile-long golden beach. The 17 simple yet elegant bedrooms are bright and airy and all have pretty views of the lawns and gardens. The restaurant serves excellent seafood and the intimate candle-lit dinners on the lawns are particularly lovely. A narrow-guage railway runs at the bottom of the garden - fortunately most people find it adds to the charm of the hotel rather than being a disturbance. We think it makes an excellent choice for honeymooners or romantics.

To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.
