Minneriya

King Mahasena built this 300-square-hectare water tank in the fourth century, and it became popular with modern visitors because of the herds of wild elephant which gather on its shores to drink in the afternoons. It eventually became the centrepiece of Minneriya-Giritale National Park, and with its forest surroundings supports an incredible variety of wildlife: in the lake itself are Mugger (or Tank) crocodiles and fish, around it stalk pelicans, herons and storks, while the trees hide skinks, red-lipped lizards, trees frogs, Hanging parrots, Sri Lanka Jungle fowl and Grey hornbills. Rarely seen, but there nevertheless, are sloth bears, pythons and leopards.
