Weligama is a bustling coastal town roughly a 40 minute drive east of Galle, on the most southern tip of Sri Lanka. The town centre is set back from the beach and here you will witness day-to-day Sri Lankan town life. The beach is wide and long, covered with lots of colourful fishing boats and it is a great place to buy fresh fish from the morning catch. The beach is famous for its gentle break breach waves – a perfect spot to learn to surf in the warm and gentle water with surf instructors from around the world. It is also just a 5 minute drive from Mirissa Harbour where the southern whale-watching excursions depart from – an area also known for its distinctive stilt fisherman that can be seen in the early hours of the morning and early evening.
