Wellawaya
A small town conveniently located at the crossroads to the hill country and the east coast, Wellawaya is a handy and charming stopover.
Located in the heart of the dry plains of the ancient Sinhalese kingdom of Ruhunu, Wellawaya itself is a very quiet town but there is plenty to see and do in the surrounding area, such as visiting the local villages, waterfalls and wildlife parks.
We recommend a visit to the nearby Buduruwagala temple, an ancient Buddhist temple complex with spectacular carvings dating back to the 10th century, which is just a 20-minute scenic drive from Jetwing Kaduruketha. We also recommend cycling to the Elle Wele waterfall where you can swim in the gin-clear running waters and enjoy a picnic lunch on the rocks.
Wellawaya is a gateway to many of the stunning locations in the central highlands and the southern safari parks so makes for an ideal stop off for a night or two to break up long journeys. Journey north through the spectacular Ella Gap to the Hill Country, travel directly south to Tissamaharama, east will take you to the coast, and west directly to Colombo.
When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.
