Lismore Castle
County Waterford
In addition to Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, Lismore Castle is privately owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. Dating from the 12th century, and passed down between the Boyle and Cavendish families, Lismore is a true fairytale castle. Overlooking the scenic River Blackwater and acres of quaint Irish countryside, the castle manages to combine both a wonderfully dramatic history with modern and luxurious levels of comfort. All of the castle's many rooms have been decorated impeccably with antique tapestries, original Pugin furniture, family heirlooms and artwork by world-famous artists such as Van Dijk and Lucian Freud. While both grand and impressive, Lismore manages to also convey a strong sense of home; family portraits, roaring fires and quirky personal touches make the castle feel incredibly welcoming. The property can host between 8 and 27 guests for exclusive hire and offers guests a personal tailored service, including the use of the castle's dedicated Butler. The estate's exquisite 8 acres of landscaped gardens and modern art gallery are open to the general public and both are well worth exploring.

I can't think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything.
