Fugitives' Drift Lodge
KwaZulu-Natal
Owned by an Anglo-Zulu war specialist, the rustic and charming Fugitive’s Drift sports two ‘camps’: The Lodge and The Guest House. Spacious en-suite cottages each have a private veranda with views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge. The Guest House is stuffed with memorabilia and richly detailed stories of war bravery abound. It also has an alluring swimming pool overlooking Isandlwana and the indigenous bushveld.
Tranquil evenings can be spent dining with delicious seasonal food. After dinner, gaze up in awe at the starry constellations and Milky Way – there is zero light pollution here. Curl up with a book in the new library with its roaring fireplace and views to die for after a day’s sightseeing.
Led by the finest guides in South Africa, thought-provoking and impacting tours are conducted daily to the famous battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. Walks and horse-rides through the reserve to view abundant game (including giraffe, zebra and impala) and birdlife are offered as well as fishing on the Buffalo River.
Like all great travellers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen.
