Kariega Settler’s Drift
Eastern Cape

A five-star luxury lodge deep in the remote and untouched Kariega Game Reserve, the wonderfully-named Settler’s Drift is an inspired safari choice.

The nine tented lodges are open-plan with private viewing decks and luxurious touches such as freestanding baths set against a large window. Gaze down at the nearby Bushman’s River and absorb the serenity of staying in a place untouched by human hand since a band of settlers passed through in 1820.

A typical day starts at 6am and two game drives (dawn and dusk) offer the chance to see a wide range of animals including elephants, giraffes and rhinos. Bringing binoculars is a must and warm clothes during the winter months for the highly-recommended nocturnal safari. Meals offer superb cuisine, hearty and imaginative. We adore the relaxing massage in the spa in between adventures. Lying in bed and listening to the lions roaring in the bush is a memory to be cherished.

Getting to Amanpulo from Manila was very simple and the beach was the most beautiful I’d ever been on; pristine white sand, not a single piece of rubbish in sight. You get your own solar powered golf buggy to drive around resort (and a butler at request). The views from the Hillside Casita were spectacular!
