La Residence
Franschhoek & The Winelands
La Residence, in the Cape Dutch town of Franschhoek, sits proudly on a hillock like a burnt orange manor house and is set amongst the most verdant landscape of the Franschhoek valley. Surrounded by Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz vineyards, olive groves and plum orchards, La Residence has an air of opulence and tranquillity.
The main house comprises of eleven suites that are perfect for couples. No two rooms are the same and each one is decorated in a uniquely funky manner, with giant mirrors on the walls and colourful Liz Biden furnishings. The Nomatemba Suite has a warmth to it, and colourful Chinese and African artwork adorns the walls. The Armani Suite is more contemporary with a more neutral palette. The Maharani Suite has a decidedly Indian feel about it; deep reds and yellows adorn this room and the bed is raised, reminiscent of an opulent Rajasthani palace. These suites have luxurious king size beds and the Maharani Suite has two balconies with beautiful views onto the mountains of Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve.
For families or small groups there are five Vineyard Suites which are just on the other side of the garden and opposite the vineyards. Suite 1 has two splendidly sized en-suite bedrooms, a joint terrace and a 25-metre pool – perfect to keep the children entertained! The pool in the main house has an enviable position looking out over the ‘koppies’ (mountains) so be sure to spend at least one afternoon in total relaxation. Dining at Le Residence is a delectable affair with lunch, afternoon tea and dinner open to non-residents (although it’s incredibly popular so booking is recommended). Wine stewards are on hand to guide guests through their meal and ensure that the right wine is paired. Afternoon tea is also delightful, sitting amongst glittering Indian chandeliers and colourful sofas it is a charming way to end a day of exploring the winelands.
La Residence sits on the outskirts of Francschhoek (just a 5-minute drive to the high street) so it is well suited for those who have a car. Franschhoek has a plethora of activities on offer, ranging from the indulgent Wine Tram to the energetic hiking trails of Mont Rochelle. It has a fantastic range of restaurants which are all worth going to, time permitting of course! La Residence is a great place to base yourself whilst you take advantage of the frivolities of the Winelands.
