The Oberoi Grand
Calcutta
Affectionately known as the grande dame of Calcutta, The Oberoi Grand remains our favourite hotel in the city, despite the arrival of several newer properties. Sitting proudly on Chowringhee Road, in the heart of Calcutta, this iconic hotel exudes old-world elegance and offers a calm oasis from the city’s energy and intensity.
The hotel’s neo-classical façade, fishtail palms and grand pillared entrance create a soothing fusion of classical and traditional Indian styles that perfectly reflect Calcutta’s colonial heritage. Inside, the high ceilings, colonnaded verandahs and central courtyard garden lend the property a timeless quality. At its heart is a tranquil green space where guests can sunbathe, take tea, or cool down in the large palm-fringed pool, a surprisingly peaceful escape from the bustling city streets just beyond.
Originally opened in the 1880s, The Oberoi Grand has a long and storied history. Once a boarding house, it was transformed in the early 20th century by Armenian entrepreneur Arathoon Stephen, and later acquired by Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi in 1938. It became the first hotel under the now world-renowned Oberoi Group, laying the foundations for its reputation of impeccable service.
Although the interiors may feel a little dated in places, this only adds to the charm; rooms and suites are spacious, elegant and convey a genuine sense of gracious living. Each comes with modern comforts, including Wi-Fi, and many offer views over the gardens or inner courtyard.
Dining at The Oberoi Grand is a highlight: Threesixtythree° offers excellent international cuisine in a stylish setting, while Baan Thai serves up authentic Thai flavours in a more intimate space. The bar is ideal for an evening drink after a day exploring the city’s cultural sites.
The hotel's facilities include a well-equipped gym, Oberoi Spa, and that wonderfully atmospheric swimming pool, consistently rated as one of the most enjoyable features by returning guests. But it is the service – thoughtful, attentive and discreet – that truly sets the hotel apart, making a stay here feel both welcoming and special.
With its heritage, charm and central location just moments from the Indian Museum, Victoria Memorial and the colourful New Market, The Oberoi Grand is the ideal base for exploring the cultural richness of Calcutta, while enjoying the serenity of a luxury retreat.
