Coconut Lagoon
Kumarakom
Located on the eastern shores of Vembanad Lake, Coconut Lagoon is a palm-framed haven of relaxation, set on an abandoned coconut plantation within the backwaters of Kumarakom. Only accessible by boat, the “gate” to the property is via a little canal a kilometre upstream, where boats can slowly meander on the lake’s tranquil movements. The backwater resort reflects a true CGH Earth experience; a calming atmosphere throughout the lush gardens, with crisscrossed canals and footbridges that guide you through the grounds of Coconut Lagoon.
The hotel comprises of a number of traditional wooden Villas and Bungalows which have been built from the remnants of old South Indian private mansions. The former family homes have been carefully reconstructed and relocated in picturesque locations dotted across the plantation. The wooden structures have been constructed using the architectural principles of Thachu Shastra, a traditional Keralan craftsmanship known for its understanding of materials; nails have not been used and the doors operate an impressive and ornate locking system that once represented wealth and refinement. Whether staying in one of the lake facing Villas with private pool from which to watch sunset over the lake, the Heritage Bungalows with private verandas or one of the upper story Heritage Mansions; staying here provides the perfect first-hand experience of authentic Keralan living from a by-gone era. Despite the accommodation being inspired by its traditional and natural surroundings, modern amenities and services are in place for comfort and contentment.
There are a number of dining options at Coconut Lagoon: a variety of cuisines are freshly prepared at Ettukettu, an all-day rustic restaurant serving breakfast through to dinner. Our favourite is enjoying the catch of the day from the Vembanad Grill, where dishes are perfectly mixed with softer South Indian spices and coconut, a Keralan staple. For a unique dining experience, a candlelit dinner under the stars and amidst the green paddy fields is available on request.
The unique location of the swimming pool allows you to relax under the South Indian sun, whilst gazing over the lake's placid landscape views. Typical of CGH Earth and Keralan traditions, Coconut Lagoon comes with its own Ayurveda centre, offering a range of massages and therapies to help you unwind during your stay. Vembanad Lake is also home to many species of birds which come to visit the property over various seasons, but for when they aren’t flying the nest, take an enchanting stroll through the eco-friendly butterfly garden. Other experiences include; canoe rides through Kumarakom’s canals, visiting the floating tea shop which sails from one village to the next or spend an evening with Kerala’s dancers and musicians, whom showcase traditional 18th century Ottan Thullal – a poetic performance.
Our favourite way to enjoy the lake is during an idyllic sunset cruise – a beautiful and breathtaking way to finish your backwaters experience and stay at Coconut Lagoon.
