A beautiful fusion of contemporary design, traditional Korean ‘Choga’ architecture and a beachy seaside vibe, the JW Marriot Jeju Resort and Spa is the prime luxury accommodation option on Jeju Island. The resort stretches along the cliffs on the southern edge of the island and the views from the vast lobby, the rooms and the infinity pools are all out to the sweeping East China Sea. The architects and interior designers have created spaces that allow sunshine and sea breezes to flow through, and have incorporated natural materials, stone and textiles to soften the steel, concrete and glass of the main buildings. The overall effect is spacious, airy and comfortable and feels surprisingly ‘back-to-nature’.

The majority of the resort’s 197 rooms and suites have impressive sea views, while ground floor rooms offer garden terraces and private outdoor soaking tubs. All are very spacious and feature the usual luxury amenities. Bathrooms are designed to resemble miniature Korean bathhouses with deep marble soaking tubs. The room design is very clean-lined with lots of wood. The colour palette is primarily cream and yellow (a nod to the yellow canola flowers for which Jeju is famous), combined with light-coloured woods.

Jeju is a UNESCO biosphere and natural heritage site and the resort offers plenty of opportunities to engage with the natural beauties of the island. The gardens are extensive and connect to a walking trail along the cliffs and down to local fishing villages. Activities include cocktail making or cooking classes using ingredients gathered from the gardens. The resort’s extensive art collection forms the basis of daily ‘art walks’ within the hotel, and the wellness offering includes a large spa, indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, jacuzzi’s, yoga studio, fitness centre and a natural hot springs complex.

Dining is equally enticing, with three standout venues; the relaxed all-day Island Kitchen, the wood-fired grill Flying Hog, and Yeoumul, a refined seafood omakase restaurant showcasing Jeju’s coastal bounty.

Getting to Amanpulo from Manila was very simple and the beach was the most beautiful I’d ever been on; pristine white sand, not a single piece of rubbish in sight. You get your own solar powered golf buggy to drive around resort (and a butler at request). The views from the Hillside Casita were spectacular!
