The Historical Treasures & Natural Wonders of Laos
14 days from £8,260 for 2024 per person
This is the perfect all-encompassing itinerary for anyone wanting to thoroughly explore Laos. Uncover the eclectic mix of French culture and Asian custom as you travel from south to north on this comprehensive trip.
Your journey begins with a 3-night stay in the laid-back southern province of Champasak. This rural area is home to the ancient Khmer temple complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wat Phu. Soak up the stunning views and secluded beauty as you explore this unique temple in it’s dramatic surroundings at sunrise. Nearby is the distinguished 4,000 Islands, where glistening waterfalls (including the impressive Khone Phapheng Falls, one of the largest in South East Asia) and rare flora and fauna are in abundance. The picturesque island of Don Khone is ideal for cycling amidst the magnificent scenery.
Onward with your journey, north to the modest and relaxed capital of Vientiane, staying at Settha Palace. Spend two days taking in the unperturbed city’s sights and sounds: sample the delicious flavours of Laos cuisine in the Night Market, a firm favourite amongst locals, and explore the fascinating assortment of Wats and wide leafy boulevards, dotted with crumbling colonial mansions. Continue north to the rural village of Muang La with three nights at the Muang La Resort located well off the tourist trail, nestled amongst mountains, jungles and richly gilded pagodas. Drive through the stunning landscape to the isolated villages of Ikhor and Hmong, two communities typical of provincial Laos, and acquire unique insight into the people, traditions and culture of this intriguing country.
End your adventure with four nights in the ancient former capital, Luang Prabang. Take in the city’s most beautiful structures, including the country’s most historic and enchanting temple Wat Xiengthong, as well as the unique Wat Mai and Wat Visoun, known as ‘The Water Melon Stupa’. Visit the local Phosi Market and silk weaving centre Ock Pop Tock to learn the intricate process. The nearby stunning Kuang Si waterfall is the perfect setting to finish your trip with a refreshing dip in the turquoise pools or a leisurely walk along the forest trails.
