Norwood Bungalow
Bogawantalawa Valley
Norwood Bungalow is one of five restored historic tea planter residences that form part of the celebrated Ceylon Tea Trails, Sri Lanka’s first Relais & Châteaux resort. Set high in the Bogawantalawa Valley, often referred to as “Little England” for its cool climate and colonial charm, Norwood Bungalow enjoys panoramic views over the eastern end of the valley, surrounded by lush tea fields and landscaped gardens.
This elegant heritage property captures the refined lifestyle of British planters during the height of the Ceylon tea trade. With exquisite parquet floors, open fireplaces, antique furnishings and vintage touches throughout, Norwood evokes a timeless sense of grandeur while offering every modern comfort. The six guest rooms are individually designed and named after the original tea planters who once lived there. Each room features king-size beds (except for one twin), four-poster frames, opulent drapes, polished wooden floors and antique accents, as well as modern amenities like walk-in rain showers, spacious bathtubs and large windows that open onto views of the gardens or rolling tea estates.
The Hazel Master Suite offers added space with a separate living area and tea field views, while the Wyatt and Jeffery Luxury Rooms provide direct garden access. Whichever you choose, the rooms exude a homely elegance and make it easy to unwind in style.
Guests can relax in the drawing room, well-stocked library or billiards room, or enjoy high tea or evening cocktails on the terrace as the sun sets over the valley. The manicured croquet lawn and summerhouses sprinkled throughout the grounds add a further touch of colonial charm.
For those looking to stay active, Norwood Bungalow offers a range of experiences and excursions. Enjoy guided nature walks through the tea fields, tours of nearby tea factories, birdwatching and scenic hikes into the surrounding hills. Cooking demonstrations and afternoon cream teas invite guests to indulge in Sri Lanka’s rich culinary heritage. After a day of adventure, unwind by the outdoor pool overlooking the valley, or enjoy a few lawn games with a glass of something chilled in hand.
Dining at Norwood is a highlight, with four-course gourmet dinners showcasing Sri Lankan flavours and garden-fresh ingredients, all expertly paired with wine. Each bungalow in the Tea Trails collection has its own dedicated chef, butler and house staff, ensuring service of the highest standard throughout your stay.
To fully appreciate the diverse landscapes and personalities of the Ceylon Tea Region, we recommend combining a stay at Norwood with visits to the other bungalows; Summerville, Castlereagh, Dunkeld and Tientsin. While Summerville, Castlereagh and Dunkeld sit around the scenic Castlereagh Lake, Norwood rests in the southern valley and Tientsin lies further afield in its own secluded setting. Each property has its own character, design and views, but all offer first-class service, exquisite cuisine and immersive experiences rooted in the island’s tea heritage.
Whether you’re ending a Sri Lanka itinerary with a few days of mountain tranquillity or embarking on a journey into the island’s colonial past, Norwood Bungalow promises a refined and unforgettable escape in the heart of the Tea Country.
