Water Garden Sigiriya
Sigiriya
With the Sigiriya Rock Fortress rising dramatically in the distance, Water Garden Sigiriya is a beautifully landscaped resort that brings a sense of majesty to its natural surroundings. Set in the heart of Sri Lanka’s famed Cultural Triangle, the property lies in Matale District, just a short drive from the town of Dambulla, making it ideally placed for exploring the region’s ancient wonders. The expansive resort comprises 30 elegant ground-level villas dispersed amongst waterways, pools and lush meadows. The design draws direct inspiration from the ancient water gardens of Sigiriya, echoing their geometry and tranquillity, creating a natural sense of seclusion and serenity.
Accommodation is divided into three villa categories; Deluxe Villas, Superior Deluxe Villas and the Duplex Twin Villas. The latter two come with private plunge pools and timber decks, which we highly recommend for those wanting a little more indulgence. All villas are airy and spacious, filled with natural light and furnished in a style that is both chic and homely. The resort is designed to slow the pace of life; trickling water features, birdsong at dusk and the stillness of Sri Lanka’s countryside combine to create an atmosphere of deep calm. After taking on the climb of Sigiriya Rock, guests are especially grateful to return here, to sink into the serenity, stretch out by the pool and enjoy a well-earned drink.
The main pavilion restaurant serves a mix of traditional Sri Lankan dishes and international favourites, while private, candlelit dinners can be arranged in secluded outdoor settings. The split-level bar offers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape and is one of the most memorable places to watch the sun set over Sigiriya Rock, ideally with a cooling Arrack Sour in hand. For deeper relaxation, the tranquil spa offers treatments using organic products, from rejuvenating facials to world-renowned Balinese massage.
Beyond the villas, guests can enjoy the resort’s swimming pool, fitness centre and even a heli-pad for those wishing to book scenic helicopter flights over Sigiriya and the surrounding landscape. The staff can also arrange an impressive array of experiences, from cycling through nearby villages to archery lessons, billiards or boat rides. Excursions to the region’s cultural treasures, including the Dambulla Cave Temples, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and Minneriya National Park, are easily organised, making Water Garden both a serene retreat and the perfect base for exploration.
The traveller sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see.
