Bazaruto Archipelago

The Bazaruto Archipelago beckons with its azure waters, powder white beaches bountiful marine life and dreamy accommodation. Tucked away, little fishing villages are shaded beneath orange and cashew nut trees. However, it is most certainly the sea that holds the greatest allure, warmed by the waters of the Mozambique stream and filled to the brim with an array of reef fish, sea turtles and game fish.

The Archipelago is made up of 6 sandy islands; Benguerra, Bazaruto, Bangue, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and the tiny but beautiful Pansy Shell Island. Only the larger islands of Benguerra and Bazaruto are inhabited and can be reached by boat via the pretty coastal town of Vilanculos on the mainland. Bazaruto Island is home to the fabulous Anantara Bazaruto which is the only lodge on the island. In 1971, the archipelago was declared a national park designed to protect the myriad of rare marine ecosystems, samango monkeys, green coucals and the enchanting blue-cheeked bee-eaters. Marine life in the area is colourful, unique and diverse with regular sightings of humpback whales, matra rays, leatherback turtles and the very rare Dugong. Add to this, the pristine coral reefs and you won’t be surprised to hear that this is one of the most sought after snorkelling and diving spots in the World!
